“All money is dirty.”
Directed by: Erin Lee Carr, Alex Gibney, Kristi Jacobson, Brian McGinn, Jesse Moss, Fisher Stevens
Documentary
50-77min
What do the subjects of the Netflix documentary series Dirty Money have in common? Corruption, greed, cruelty, deception, and abuse of power–traits that forty percent of the population admire in a Commander-in-Chief–and behaviors corporations regularly excuse with two of the most dangerous words in the English language: Shareholder Value.
Dirty Money examines a small selection of recent crimes against society.
Episode 1 | Hard NOx | Volkswagen cheats on emission tests. They get caught.
Episode 2 | Payday | Preying on the poor with payday loans.
Episode 3 | Drug Short | Something’s fishy about the skyrocketing stock of Valeant Pharmaceuticals.
Episode 4 | Cartel Bank | Drug Cartels could not function without the support of one of the world’s largest banks.
Episode 5 | The Maple Syrup Heist | Canada has a sticky past with its precious resource.
Episode 6 | The Confidence Man | Donald Trump.
While the series comes certified with my full recommendation, I don’t suggest a binge watch. The stories presented here (each episode by a different talented director) can get a little heavy. You might find yourself wondering, like I did, if there is still a corner of the Earth left where corruption does not lurk. So consume this one at an easy pace, and take a break part way through with something lighter.
