“Are we really saving the galaxy, again?”
Directed by: James Gunn
Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi
2h 16min
The Guardians of the Galaxy are a real motley crew.
First of all, there’s Star-Lord, an earthling kidnapped by space pirates when he was just a little kid. Then there’s Gamora. She’s a daughter of one of the most powerful and vindictive villains in the entire Marvel Universe, so it’s no wonder she has daddy issues, and trust issues, and sister issues. Drax, a monstrous, brute warrior with a primitive sense of humor, rounds out the (comparatively) normal side of the group.
The real crowd pleasers are Rocket, a cybernetically engineered raccoon that emerged from the lab a little ornery, and his buddy, Groot. Groot’s was a tree in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1. He died, but that’s okay because now he’s back as a spunky little sprout that loves to dance.
The misfit team barely gets along when things are going well, so when some guy called Ego shows up to confirm a secret hinted at in the first movie, the future of The Guardians is put to a stress test on a planetary scale.
There’s been some criticism that this sequel is not as fun or as fresh as the first film. That’s BS. The first scene subverts action movie expectations in a humorous, entertaining way, and for the rest of the movie we get to watch this make-shift family argue, blow stuff up, and find out where they really belong. Hell, even the closing credits are more fun to watch than most of the big budget releases this year.
The Guardians of the Galaxy are not the heroes we deserve, nor the heroes we want, nor are they heroes that make any sort of sense whatsoever, but I’m happy they’re out there, takin’ ‘er easy for all us sinners.
