It’s a bad idea to steal eight million dollars from a drug cartel. Just ask Marty Byrd.

Ozark is a new crime thriller from Netflix about a Chicago financial advisor forced to leave his home and move his family to Missouri in a desperate attempt to stay one step ahead of the law and the people who want him dead.

There are comparisons to be made here with Breaking Bad. Both series feature a working man trying to provide for his family by any means necessary, and he’s smarter than us, ruthless, and just slightly sympathetic. However, one small but important difference is that Ozark doesn’t spend any time on the “breaking” part. The Byrd family broke bad a long time ago, and lucky for us, we get to witness their less-than-law-abiding habits catch up with them. If you ever wished that Skyler was involved in the meth business with Walter White from the very beginning then Ozark has plenty to offer you.

Series star, Jason Bateman addressed the Breaking Bad comparisons at Radiotimes saying, “Hopefully there’s a similarity in the quality of the show; that show was fantastic.”

I share Jason Bateman’s opinion on the matter.

The good stuff:

  • Cool new characters show up every episode to steal scenes.
  • Bateman delivers a great anti-hero.
  • He’s also a damn fine director. Just take a look at the first two episodes.
  • Ozark realizes that conflict is drama and doesn’t hesitate to put its characters through the wringer.
