The alternate reality of The Handmaid’s Tale is dark and superbly wicked… and we can’t wait for more.
Based on the best-selling 1985 novel by Margaret Atwood, The Handmaid’s Tale is a new original series from Hulu.
Set in the dystopian future, the Republic of Gilead is where a fundamentalist dictatorship reigns with an iron fist. We follow the life of “Offred” (Elisabeth Moss) as she is forced to be a concubine for the rich rulers of the New England area Republic. Here is a detailed map of Gilead from alternatehistory.com.
Armed security forces called the “Eyes” patrol the streets and compliance is expected from the lower classes. “They have chapters in 30 states”. Any failure to obey the strict rules of the ‘Sons of Jacob’ totalitarian regime is met with physical punishment and sometimes death.
They have come to cleanse the country.
Women are no longer allowed to have a job or own property and must submit to the men. Most women have become infertile due to the pollution and contamination of the entire continent. Fertile women are given some respect but must serve as surrogates for the leaders.
Just when you think things can’t get any worse for the Handmaids, more shocking discoveries reveal just how deep this evil runs.
