Hulu gives us a tour of Stephen King’s favorite town.

I had some preconceived notions about Castle Rock. I thought that vampires and rabid dogs would be lurking in the alley behind the antique store owned by Satan, toilets would be full of alien eels, and a day wouldn’t pass without a possessed prom queen burning down a high school.

All those things might still happen, but Castle Rock kicks off its first season with mystery instead of straight forward horror. A lot of unanswered question float around this decaying town. Did that lawyer really kill his father? Who’s that guy in the basement? Why was the warden so eager to exit this mortal coil?

The gore and jump scares can wait. Right now I need some answers.

Fans of Stephen King film adaptations will find some intrigue in the show’s cast as well. Bill Skarsgård is here, fresh from his portrayal of Pennywise in It. Chosen Jacobs was in that movie too. And then there’s the big one: Sissy Spacek, who starred in Carrie 42 years ago, is now a Castle Rock resident.

I’ll be staying in town for a while too. I like places that defy my preconceptions, but I still don’t trust those dogs, antique shops, or toilets.

If you like what Castle Rock does with the themes and locations explored by Stephen King, check out Fargo to see the Coen brothers universe receive a similar treatment.
