Matt Murdock is a lawyer. The kind of lawyer who opens a law office that accepts baked goods and produce as payment for his services. You know the kind. He’s also a vigilante known as Daredevil. He regularly patrols the dark alleys of Hell’s Kitchen looking for trouble.

Netflix’s Daredevil series scales down the Marvel Universe we’ve seen on the big screen to a manageable size. The storyline takes place in the same world where The Avengers live, work, and play, but the survival of the entire human race isn’t at stake in every episode, and the galaxy won’t be overrun by Dark Elves or Frost Giants if Matt Murdock loses a court case. Compared to the heroes we’re used to in major motion pictures, Daredevil has limited super powers. He bleeds, he gets tired, he wrestles with his moral code, and he struggles to hide his secret identity from his friends. You see, they don’t all think that Daredevil is one of the good guys. The stakes are smaller, more personal, and are a welcome change from cities dropping out of the sky and giant portals swallowing New York City.

The villains are often a weak link in Marvel movies. They are sometimes just an evil version of the hero, and other times they have disappointingly simple motivations, mostly based on revenge. In Daredevil we get a good one. Vincent D’Onofrio plays Wilson Fisk. He’s secretive and powerful and prone to wild mood swings. He has his own ideas about what’s good for Hell’s Kitchen, and he is so sure he’s right that he’ll eliminate anyone, big or small, who dares to challenge him.

If you like Daredevil, check out Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist, all on Netflix. And on August 18, 2017 they will all team up to form The Defenders.
