Matt Groening explored, and is still exploring, the lives of a typical American yellow nuclear family in The Simpsons. Then he showed us a future filled with lovable misfits in Futurama.

The only thing that makes sense in this world is that Groening sets his new animated series in a Dungeons and Dragons style land of fantasy adventure.

Welcome to the land of Disenchantment, where ogres prowl the hills, wizards want to drain your blood, and princesses get blackout drunk at the local pub. Well, not all princesses, just Princess Bean.

She’s not content being impossibly wealthy and endlessly courted by every swole prince from here to Dragonstone. Bean wants a life outside the castle walls, she yearns to be a fish out of water—and she’s not alone.

Elfo the elf, tired of his tiny village and its candy-based economy, sets off on an adventure of his own. Is it because he longs for freedom and self actualization, or is it because he’s not very bright? Tune in to find out.

The Andie and Ducky of Middle Earth meet up and join forces in their quest for a life. They are helped and hindered on their journey by a pesky little demon called Luci. Luci is perfectly content being a demon. He just wants to be the best demon he can be.

There’s certainly no guarantee that Disenchantment will have the long life of The Simpsons or gain the passionate fan base of Futurama, but the Lord of the Rings meets Game of Thrones background setting is filled with comedic possibilities. I’ll be rooting for Bean, Elfo, Luci, and their journey through Disenchantment.
