And the award for most improved sequel goes to… The Suicide Squad.

After a series of unfortunate events involving some old tweets and political misguided drama, James Gunn is back where he belongs– writing and directing movies about disastrously incompetent super misfits. And the world is a slightly better place, because he’s really good at it.

As the name implies, The Suicide Squad isn’t necessarily meant to return from missions with every member alive. They’re criminals, they’re unpredictable, and above all else, they’re expendable. Some super-human abilities and imposing personalities are the only things they have going for them.

Commanding the crew is Bloodsport, played by Idris Elba. But giving orders to the Joker’s right hand girl, Harley Quinn is not an enviable task. Add a psycho super-patriot, a shark with legs, and a polk-a-dot powered mental patient into the mix and maybe it’s better to just give up.

For a filmmaker, wrangling a cast of bizarre characters all demanding equal screen time is usually a disaster waiting to happen. Look no further than the original Suicide Squad (2016) for evidence of how bad things can go. After his practice with Guardians of the Galaxy and it’s brilliantly fun sequel, James Gunn might be the only man on Earth we can trust to lead The Suicide Squad.
